This is the time of year for Coach Sly to get some of his weird thoughts on high school sports off his chest.

Coach Sly was wowed to see St. Charles East reel in Dave Haskins as its new baseball coach.

St. Charles East athletic director Jerry Krieg on Tuesday announced the hiring of Dave Haskins as baseball coach. He replaces Mark Foulkes, who resigned in May after six seasons.

Danny Jimenez, a 2008 St. Charles North graduated, has signed a pro contract with the Cleveland Indians, Jimenez confirmed on Thursday.

With the first half of the season winding down last week, the chase to the playoffs came down to one game. If we won we would win the Western Division outright, and if we lost that was not a guarantee. Shawn Haviland came up with a great start for us and we got some offensive help from Franklin Hernandez, who hit a big grand slam. We won the game and the division to cap off a great first half of the season.

The Batavia baseball program will hold its sixth annual alumni game at 1 p.m. Sunday at Elfstrom Stadium in Geneva.
