Don't hate, congratulate
Coach Sly knows Geneva football is not universally beloved around these parts. That's what happens when you have a program dominate over a period of years. You create some few ill-wishers along the way.
But even those most tired of hearing about great Geneva football is have to give the Vikings' coaches and players some megaprops. Here's a team that lost 10 starters on offense, seven more on defense and showed on Friday that it ain't going to show much in the final record.
And there's no sayin' "Yeah, but they play in the rinky-dinky Western Sun." Geneva has beaten a couple big schools, STCE and Morgan Park, to start the season. Toppling Morgan Park 31-20 is a statement win for Geneva. Kudos to the Vikings' honchos for scheduling a quality city opponent like Morgan Park, and to the Vikings' players and coaches for handling their business, like usual.
Sly has a hard time believing this is the first time STCN has been 2-0. To do it with two straight blowouts, minus their top back (Huxtable) and maybe their top wideout (Mikes) is kinda scary. North fans, time to start livin' it up and talkin' a little smack. This year's going to be a lot of fun, baby. These guys are for real!
Glad to see the Doggies are on the board. Coach Sly will avoid pickin' on poor old West Chicago and instead congratulate Batavia for picking itself off the mat after a dud of an opener.
We'll see if Kaneland and STCE can do the same next week. East is due a scheduling break and they'll finally get one. As for Kaneland, that's a disappointing loss in Sly's book. Yeah, Huntley is a pretty good team, but if you turn it over that much and lose by only 3 points, you coughed up the game, plain and simple.
Speaking of turnovers, anyone get a load of that Aurora Christian-Mendota game? Jeepers. No disrespect to the Eagles' fine program, but watching a game like that has gotta make ole coach Beebe long for those NFL days ... or at least popping in the tapes from all those Super Bowls.
