According to entertainment news website Deadline.com, NBC has canceled "Are You There, Chelsea?," a show that saw Geneva native Julie Larson serving as its executive producer.

In an interview with the Kane County Chronicle earlier this year, Larson said she wasn't sure whether or not the show would get picked up, saying the network "is kind of in-flux so you can't plan on anything."

Julie Larson did not immediately return a phone message Friday afternoon.

"Are You There, Chelsea?" finished its Wednesday night run at the end of March leaving its staff unsure of its future for more than a month after the last episode aired. NBC also canceled fellow Wednesday night comedies "Best Friends Forever" and "Bent," according to the Deadline report, while renewing "Whitney" and Thursday comedies "Community," "30 Rock," "The Office," and "Parks and Recreation."

Geneva student named to national flute choir

GENEVA – Ann Green, a Geneva High School junior, was recently named to the National High School Flute Choir, one of only 18 flute players across the country.

“I was ecstatic,” Green said. “It’s pretty exciting. For a while, I didn’t know if I could go into music. But after something like this, maybe I could actually have a shot
at being successful doing
it.”

Green and her family will travel to Las Vegas, where Green will rehearse with the other students. She will perform as part of the choir at 2 p.m. Aug. 12 at the National Flute Association Convention in Caesar’s Palace.

She started playing the recorder in school and then tried both clarinet and flute in fifth grade.

“I couldn’t get anything out of the clarinet,” she said. “But I got something out of the flute. My sister played the flute so she basically taught me how to play.”

Her piano accompanist, Rachel Maley of Imedia Recording in St. Charles, and her private flute teacher, Lynee Green, both helped her prepare to enter the competition. Geneva’s band director, Pat Frederick, also played a role.

“I would be nowhere without my flute teacher,” Green said.

Her parents were thrilled for their daughter after finding out about Ann’s honor.

“It makes me very proud of her and I really admire her for her hard work,” said Lisa Green, Ann’s mother. “She puts a lot of time and effort into playing her flute.”

“All of Ann’s music teachers and fellow music students at Geneva High School are extremely proud of Ann for this outstanding accomplishment,” said Geneva High School band director Pat Frederick. “Obviously, this level of success does not come without an incredible amount of hard work, along with a great deal of support from home.”
