Furnace inspections should be an annual affair. In the long run, it can save a homeowner money and prolong the life of the heating system.

New or old, it’s important to keep a furnace in good working order. It’s recommended that a homeowner schedule his or her annual furnace inspection in the fall – from late September through Dec. 21.

Ideally, furnace maintenance should be done before the cold Chicago winter tries to blast us into hibernation.

Schedule a time that works best to have a heating contractor inspect the furnace on – approximately – the same date every year. Then, just as you would an annual checkup with a medical doctor, dentist or optometrist, schedule an appointment and keep it. The health of a furnace depends on consistent care.

One may ask, “Is an annual checkup for the furnace really that important,?” Good question. Yes, and for three very good reasons.

1. It will prolong the life of your heating system (good)

2. It will save a homeowner money on energy bills (better)

3. It will decrease health risks (best!)

Your furnace is a lot like your car. If you ignore it, it will break down, which will require more time and money to restore it to good working order. If you don’t maintain your car’s engine with regular oil changes, for example, your car will die. It will never to be restored to life again, and you can forget about “good working order.”

Failure to maintain your furnace annually will increase monthly heating bills, too. When a furnace is neglected, it might not run efficiently. Meaning that it must work harder to do its job to keep your family warm. And that means higher energy bills.

Yes, furnace maintenance decreases health risks. Your furnace could be leaking carbon monoxide – that colorless and odorless gas that causes headaches, dizziness, nausea, emergency room visits and even death. All reason enough to have the furnace inspected annually. If your furnace is leaking carbon monoxide, an HVAC professional will find the leak during a furnace inspection.

It’s also important to change the filter every three months – at least. Also, use a programmable thermostat and schedule annual furnace inspections.
