July is National Ice Cream Month, a great time to try making your favorite ice cream at home. Experimenting with various ingredients and methods allows you to create delicious treats the whole family will love!
If you don’t have an ice cream maker at home, no worries. Start with 2 cups of heavy cream, and whip it until it forms stiff peaks. In a separate bowl, mix one 14-oz can of sweetened condensed milk with your favorite mix-ins, and then fold in the whipped cream. Put in a 2-qt. container and freeze for six hours or until firm. For one variation, add 3 tbsp melted butter, 1 tsp vanilla, and 1 tsp cinnamon to the sweetened condensed milk before folding in the whipped cream. For another tasty treat, add 1 1/2 tsp vanilla and 4-6 chopped up glazed doughnuts to the milk. Add your favorite ingredients to make your own creations and enjoy!
If you do have an ice cream maker, try the following recipe for yummy banana ice cream. Whisk together 1 cup sugar, 6 egg yolks, and 4 cups milk in a heavy saucepan over medium heat. Cook, whisking constantly, until the mixture thickens and coats a spoon (don’t boil), about 20 minutes. Remove from the heat, and add in 2 cups half-and-half and 3 tsp. vanilla extract. Fold in 3-4 ripe mashed bananas, cover, and chill three hours. Pour into the ice cream maker and freeze according to your device’s instructions.
For delicious chocolate ice cream, whisk together 1 14-oz can sweetened condensed milk, 1 5-oz. can evaporated milk, 2 cups chocolate milk, and 3/4 cup chocolate syrup in a large bowl. Cover and chill 1 hour. Pour mixture into ice cream maker and freeze according to directions. Add almonds, chocolate chips, or miniature marshmallows if desired.
