When Mother’s Day rolls around dads and kids often have a difficult time coming up with an appropriate gift to express their appreciation for all that Mom does.
Because Mother’s Day is a family-oriented holiday symbolic gifts are special, says Martha Sanchez, who manages State Street Jewelers, in Geneva. Mother’s Day rings and pendants embedded with a child’s birthstone or a particular number of diamonds, one for each child, are popular.
“Sometimes fathers will bring in their kids and let them pick out a piece specifically for her, which is kind of fun,” says Sanchez. “We can then customize the piece, which makes it a little more personal. Sometimes the child will just say, ‘Mom likes blue,’ and they’ll pick something blue.”
Mother’s Day is second in line to Christmas as far as the purchase of jewelry gifts, Sanchez says.
“Kids like to show their mom how much they love them and it’s fun to do that with a piece of jewelry that moms treasure and will have for a lifetime,” says Sanchez. “It shows us, as an industry, that people really love to do things for their mom and show how much she means to them. It’s evident to us when they come in for Mother’s Day.”
Necklaces and rings are top sellers. “Sometimes we’ll do a bracelet with a charm that we can engrave with a short message or the child’s name,” Sanchez says. Little boy and girl charms and hearts are popular.
For moms who love vintage pieces, State Street Jewelers is hosting an estate jewelry sale right before Mother’s Day, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Wednesday, May 9. “That’s a fun little option this year,” notes Sanchez.
“If they want something specific they should get to the shop a little early so we have time to put it together, but we’re up for the last-minute ones, too,” says Sanchez.
