Spring clean the green way

SPONSORED

While it may not seem like it, spring is right around the corner.

For many that means preparing their homes for the new season by doing some spring cleaning.

Will you be one of them? You can give your home a fresh beginning without lining the curb with garbage bags full of unwanted clutter.

For instance, if tackling the closets is on your spring cleaning list, consider donating your old clothing and linens to a thrift store. Or get some friends together and host a clothing swap.

Have bathroom cabinet shelves lined with expired or unused medications? Don’t toss those pills, capsules, aerosols and more in the trash. Instead, take advantage of a collection program. Many pharmacies and police departments participate in National Prescription Drug Take-Back events, in partnership with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, where collection sites are set up and residents can drop off expired, unused, or unwanted prescription drugs in an environmentally-conscious way. Find an event near you by visiting the DEA website.

Weeding out old dishes, old cookware, silverware, and glasses in your kitchen drawers and cabinets? Consider taking pots and pans which are no longer suitable for use to a scrap metal recycler. You can also repurpose some of those kitchen items. For instance, old pots, bowls and serving dishes can be turned into planters.

Need to get rid of some old or unwanted televisions, monitors, computers, tablets or cell phones?

Don’t toss them in the trash. Elgin Recycling offers citizens countless opportunities throughout the year to properly dispose of their e-waste through special one-day recycling events and at their recycling centers.

When it comes to cleaning products themselves, you can also go green this spring by ditching the chemicals for more earth-friendly cleaning supplies. Also, opt for sponges and reusable cloths over paper towels to save on waste.
