3 things to know about engraving

When buying a gift of jewelry or gifting a precious heirloom or treasured piece, engraving can add a personal touch that gives your gift special meaning.

“Basically, engraving is the best and most popular way to personalize a gift,’ says Martha Sanchez, who manages State Street Jewelers, in Geneva, Illinois. “Your gift will be extra special when you add a personal quote, date, or name.”

Here are 3 things you may not have known about the art of engraving.

1. Engraving is not limited to just jewelry. “At State Street Jewelers we can engrave items for baby gifts such as baby cups, rattles, or flatware,” says Sanchez. A locket is a time-honored gift that lends itself well to engraving, and can hold a special photo, lock of hair, or other small item of importance or remembrance. Charms can also be engraved, and come in a host of themes, from traditional hearts, to sports, various professions, musical instruments and more.

2. There are different ways to engrave. Machine engravers that will engrave on all metal surfaces and glass. Inside ring engravers are used for wedding bands and other rings.

3. If an item has an unusual shape it can be hand engraved. “Hand engraving is an art that takes many years to master,” explains Sanchez. “Sometimes we will suggest hand engraving on a vintage item so that the style of engraving will be in keeping with the piece.”

Beginning this month State Street Jewelers will be offering laser engraving, the latest in technology. “With the laser engraver you will be able to engrave a logo or design on any metal item,” says Sanchez. “Also, you can have a handwritten note duplicated, or a picture etched on an item. The laser also has the capability to cut out or pierce a design.”

Stop in or call and the staff at State Street Jewelers can advise you on the best way to personalize your next gift.
