The following is what readers sounded off about in the past week:
Too many voter registration cards
I just received in the mail another voter registration card that is only six months older than the last one I received in October 2009. The new one is dated March 2010. Why is our Kane County Clerk's office, that is run by John Cunningham, can afford to send new registration cards that are identical to the ones that we received five months ago? If you want to save money, start thinking wisely about the money you are spending on postage.
Courage to vote for health care bill
I just wanted to say that I agree with all the liberals who said it took a lot of courage for Representative Foster to support the Obama health care bill. Because now we have a health care plan written by a committee whose chairman says he does not understand it. It was passed by a Congress that hasn't read it but they exempt themselves from it. And it was signed into law by a president who hasn't read it, either, who smokes. And now it will be funded and administered by a treasury chief who did not pay his taxes and it will overseen by a surgeon general who is obese and financed by a country that is going broke. It does take a lot of nerve and courage.
Hiring 50 and older
This for the person that says that they're going to hire people over childbearing years. Yes, I am one of those people. But do you honestly think ... that us over 50 are going to stay until we are 65 years old or later with getting no benefits, no health insurance? We'd be better off staying home. Yes I do work someplace where I get no benefits, no health care insurance and I work my butt off and what do I get? Nothing. Do you honestly that think I would stay that long at a company? This was written by a male and that is also discrimination. Because after 50, you come across a lot of other problems besides having children. And guess what? Women in their 50s, who are healthy, can have children. So how are you going to hire on that? This was written by a male.
Charging school fees
I agree that Batavia School District has not made the fees high enough for extra curricular activities like football, baseball, basketball, acting and all this other stuff that is not academically required. But on the other hand ... they refuse to tell parents what courses are actually required courses for graduation. So those fees for those courses – if required for graduation – are not extracurricular activities ... therefore Batavia is charging tuition and tuition is illegal under the Illinois Constitution.
Foster made thoughtful decision
All the flap over the health care bill and Bill Foster's vote is kind of misguided. Rep Foster is one of the few representatives in Congress who read the entire bill, studied it, asked questions and made a thoughtful decision. And the people who think that he is not representing them, need to know that he is representing us. And if he disagrees with one individual, doesn't mean he is not representing his district. he can't go there and cast a split his vote. he has to vote to support the entire district. He was elected by people who trust his judgment and sent him there. He is the anti-Hastert.
Donate rummage sale leftovers
Answer to too many rummage sales: If you have one garage sale versus five, you probably won't sell enough to make it worth your while and trouble. Be happy with what you sell and donate the rest, you can make a little money and take a tax deduction. Did Obama eliminate tax deductions for donations in 2011? Uh-oh. Garage sale earnings might be taxable.
Red-light cameras up cost of going to lunch
We want to compliment the Chronicle on their article on the red light cameras. We had a situation with one of our vans which multiple employees drive and we have approximately 150 employees. They went to lunch at the Geneva Commons at Jimmy John's for about $7. He got behind some slow-moving traffic and got a ticket on the ingress where Geneva has the new red light camera. That made the sandwich a $108 sandwich. We instructed our employees to shop in Batavia and not Geneva Commons and so that Geneva will pay the price in not getting the sales tax over there. The Batavia City Council has been very responsible and not put up these silly lights where they ticket the vehicle and not a picture of the driver so you could even identify the driver. So the owner gets the ticket, not the driver of the vehicle, which, in our opinion, is wrong.
Barking dogs not springtime joy
Spring has finally arrived and summer not far behind. We can now open our windows and enjoy the fresh breezes and, of course listen, to the incessant barking of the neighborhood dogs.
Camera found last year still unclaimed
Approximately a year ago, I was in the Woodland Hills Park and I found a camera sitting on a table in the park. I turned it in to the (Batavia) park district. They have it there. I won't give any details on what it looks like, but if anybody left one there a year, year and a half ago, they still have it over there. If it's your camera, go over there and pick it up.
Forest preserve outhouses need to be unlocked
What's going on with the forest preserve locking the outhouses and turning off the water that they just turned on? It was bad enough last winter when they plowed the parking lot but they did not clear a path to the outhouse. For us people who are handicapped, we need these places. So why are they doing it?
Eco-friendly man befuddled by rising water rates
I just read in the news that St. Charles is raising its water rate because we citizens are using less water. I had to read the article twice because I could not believe what I was reading. I'm an eco-friendly kind of a guy and I don't double flush the toilet any more. In the private sector, when a product or service gets less use, they either lower the price or improve the service. Hopefully the local Tea Party will get involved in this one.
Politicians should return money to Bear Stearns
Republican senator candidate Mark Kirk is returning the money he received from Bear Stearns. President Obama received almost a million dollars from Bear Stearns. Why isn't he returning that along with all of the other politicians who have received money from Bear Sterns?
Mom's job irrelevant in headline
I thought it was totally unnecessary that you put in bold print, "The son of Batavia official was arrested." If she worked in a factory or Panera or somewhere else, you would not have put that in the headline. Her being the finance director of Batavia has nothing to do with what he did. I feel you have embarrassed her, and I feel bad for her, and I don't even know her.
