BATAVIA – Lexi Jones of Batavia did not expect her song about her hometown baseball team to quickly build a buzz.

Jones, 19, thought her untitled song about the Kansas City Royals’ postseason run would garner a couple hundred views on YouTube when it was posted online Oct. 25.

As of early Monday evening, the song has reached more than 5,950 views. In the days following the song’s debut, Jones was featured on Kansas City-area media outlets and Sport Illustrated linked to the video, as well.

The Royals went on to win the World Series on Sunday, handily beating the New York Mets in five games.

“It’s really exciting,” Jones said.

Jones grew up in Richmond, Missouri – about an hour east of Kansas City – before she moved to Batavia with her family in 2010.

Jones’ family has long been Royals fans. When the team won the American League Championship Series on Oct. 23 against the Toronto Blue Jays, the decision was made to rework one of Jones’ work-in-progress songs and insert Royals-friendly lyrics.

Jones premiered the song with a YouTube video she created that features her performing along with footage from Royals games posted on the Internet.

“I worked all weekend to make the video and posted it that Sunday [Oct. 25],” Jones said.

As a Waubonsee Community College sophomore, Jones is studying film production as a backup plan but continues to work on music.

Jones performs across the Chicago area in the band Fountain of June when all the members are back home from college. She has also performed at the Batavia Farmers Market.

“It’s a lot of fun to connect with people while I’m performing,” Jones said.
