I had the chance to meet with Dave Bauer, the special projects manager at the Garfield Farm Museum in La Fox. Bauer is also the unofficial resident chicken caretaker.
The museum cares for about 150 chickens, mostly the black Java breed.
During my visit with Dave, I learned that Garfield Farm is also part of the “Genetics: Decoding Life” exhibit at Chicago’s Museum of Science and Industry, which contains the popular chick hatching incubator and includes their rare Black Java chickens. That is one of my favorite exhibits at MSI, and I can’t wait to go back with this new knowledge.
