After transferring from UC Irvine to El Camino College Compton junior college, Hughes, a coach Martinez had never met or heard of, pitched him on the allure of Boomer-Sooner Country.
"He was just saying, 'We need a guy like you at Oklahoma. We'd love to have you,'" said Martinez, the Cougars starting catcher.
"I knew that if I just follow this man, and let him just teach me the right ways at Oklahoma, that he could prepare me to get ready for professional baseball."
Martinez, a San Pedro, Calif. native, is now among five Cougars teammates who will represent the franchise at the Midwest League All-Star game on June 19 in Lansing, Mich. Martinez, who is hitting .333 with a .935 OPS, 12 doubles, four homers and 26 runs batted in over 34 games with the Cougars, has been named to the starting lineup.
