The nephew of former NFL linebacker and Florida A&M head coach Earl Holmes, Tra (pronounced “Trey”) Holmes is taking an increased focus to his hitting. Thus far, Holmes has nine strikeouts to three hits in 29 at-bats.
Hitting struggles aside, Holmes plays for a much more personal, intimate purpose.
His father, Tracy, tragically passed away three years ago in a semi-truck accident.
“Everything happens for a reason,”said Holmes, who occasionally wears a charm with his picture on it. “At the time, I was transferring from Northwest Florida., and I felt like I needed to go a little bit harder, work a little harder. It kind of gave me the boost of energy I needed.”
His father used to call him after every game. The charmed necklace, last worn on Father’s Day, simply hangs in Holmes’ locker. Before every game, he taps it.
“He showed me how to take care of a family…just everything a Dad should,” said Holmes. “That’s what he was.”
