ELBURN – Kaneland will compete in the state final for the first time since 2012.
Kaneland hosted the Class 2A Sectional at Hughes Creek Golf Course on Monday, and the Knights took third place with 312. Senior Will Marshall scored 74 to medal in third place for the Knights, and the Nebraska commit is looking forward to his third trip to the state championships.
“I haven’t had the chance to go down there as a team,” Marshall said. “I feel like we all have a chance to score low, so hopefully we can throw up a low score and place. We all had the home-course advantage today, and even though I really struggled off the tee, I was able to piece my round together and I got it done on the greens.”
Junior Bryce Stair and sophomore Ryan Milton each carded 78 for Kaneland, which entered Monday’s competition having taken fourth in three straight sectional tournaments. Milton will be making his second appearance at the state final, while Stair and the rest of the Knights will play for the first time.
“It will help knowing what to expect going down there,” Milton said. “Knowing the pressure and how the course plays will help. [Hughes Creek] was pretty wet today, and the wind got to me on the front nine, but I finished strong and I drove the ball well. I’m looking forward to having a great time with all my teammates.”
Freshman Josh Pehl carded 82, with freshman Cody Ganzon (88) and junior Michael Partoll (91) rounding out the Kaneland squad Monday. The Class 2A State Final will begin at Friday Illinois State University’s Weibring Golf Club in Normal before concluding Saturday.
“I’m excited, and I just want to have fun down there,” Stair said. “I’ve played the course a few times and I’m just looking to put up a good score. I think it will be fun, and I hope that we can play well as a team.”
