His family and friends were in the stands to witness it.
"My Dad has always told me: 'You've always got to set your standards high," Thomas said.
"Never set them low because then you're not reaching your full potential. Being [in Kane County], I'm going to treat it like anything else...I'm not going to do anything different, still stay the course and continue to try and get better."
Cougars manager Vince Harrison had seen a mature approach from Thomas in lead up to the season.
"I was more impressed with his ability to stay pretty calm in the situation and it didn't seem like any situation got too big for him," Harrison said earlier this week at Media Day.
"Just even [on Tuesday], he asked about the pants for practice," Harrison said. "He said 'I'm getting my pants hemmed up.'...I said: 'That's a vet move, you've been around some people.'"
