GENEVA – At 8 years old, Adelyn Estabrook already has an award-winning recipe: Guaca – “bowl” – e.
Clad in a T-shirt proclaiming, “I cooked my way to the district finals,” the Mill Creek second grader served up her original dish to Geneva District 304 school board members and staff at the May 13 meeting.
The competition was held at Geneva High School in March.
“You had to make a dish,” Adelyn explained. “It had to be Mexican. You had an hour and 30 minutes to make it. And so when you were done, you brought it to the table and the judges got to taste it. And then they took a few pictures and they announced the winner. There was a tie for third, and then second. And they announced the Guac – a “bowl” – e. And I was very excited.”
“So this is your own recipe,” School board president Mark Grosso asked.
“Yes,” Adelyn replied.
“I think we’re all going to look forward to enjoying this later,” Grosso said. “We certainly thank you and congradulations on your award.”
Cindy Anderson, Sodexo food service director for Geneva Middle School South, said they had 13 contestants across the district for the Future Chef competition.
Sodexo Food Service Director Rick Heraldt said it was great participation from the students and the community and plan to do it again next year.
“We’ll probably do a food war maybe between the two middle schools,” Heraldt said. “One of the judges was a middle school teacher and she was excited about doing something like this.”
“I need to ask – you said a ‘food war.’ Is that like a food fight? Cause I’ll get my raincoat on and come out,” Grosso said.
Heraldt said it would be a chef competition between the two schools.
Adelyn Estabrook’s Guac – a “bowl” – e recipe
4 whole avocados
1-2 teaspoons taco seasoning
1 pound of ground beef
Pinch of salt
Brown ground beef to a temperature of 165 degrees.
Add taco season to your taste and salt.
Cut avocados in half and remove the seed.
Use a fork to mash the inside of each avocado half.
Add the cooked, seasoned meat to the inside of each half.
Top each half with shredded cheddar cheese, salsa, fresh chopped cilantro and dried plantains.
