Name: Grace Salyers
School: Batavia, junior
Why she was selected: Salyers scored the game-winning goal for Batavia in both of its regional wins, 1-0 over Elk Grove Village and 1-0 over Geneva. The junior forward caught up with Chronicle sports reporter Jacob Bartelson to discuss her season and more. Below is an edited transcript.
Bartelson: How did you come to love soccer?
Salyers: I love the competition and the team aspect of soccer, [which includes] working with my teammates to move the ball, find the seams and get balls in the net.
Bartelson: Is there an athlete you personally view as a role model in the sport? Why?
Salyers: Anne Poulin. She is one of my former club coaches who has helped me since I was young. Her soccer journey [of] playing in college and then in Europe has proved to me that I can do anything I put my mind to.
Bartelson: Batavia has had a fantastic season. How do you view your role in the success?
Salyers: I think I have helped with our offensive attack, either by playing my teammates in or finishing balls played to me. Also, I try to always stay positive and work hard.
Bartelson: What, if anything, have you learned about yourself this season?
Salyers: To never give up. We have had a lot of games this season where we were the underdogs or were scored on early in the game, but we all kept fighting. The season has taught me the game doesn’t end until the buzzer.
