ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – The Marklund Hyde Center’s Summer Games event will take place at 10:15 a.m. June 8 at 1S450 Wyatt Drive in the Mill Creek subdivision in Blackberry Township near Geneva, officials announced in a news release.

Originally created as Marklund’s version of the Special Olympics, the Summer Games give residents and community clients the opportunity to participate in various outdoor competitive events with the help of volunteers, families and staff.

“It all started in 1986 with Marklund’s recreational and physical therapists wanting the individuals we serve to have a chance to shine and use their abilities in adaptive sports and activities rather than focus on their disabilities,” Gunjan Patel, director of therapy at Marklund, stated in the release.

Volunteers and family members who attend will be partnered with residents to help them play the games or will be placed at one of the booths to run a game.

There will be a parade of athletes, music, games, activities, and a BBQ picnic at the conclusion of the event.

In case of inclement weather, activities will be held indoors.

For information on volunteering, call Cathy Nikrandt at 630-593-5468 or email cnikrandt@marklund.org.
