ST. CHARLES – A preliminary investigation has revealed that a St. Charles man was speeding when his motorcycle crashed into a car in St. Charles on June 8.

Gustavo Sanchez Pineda, 49, died of his injuries following the crash.

"I’m not certain that we will be able to determine exactly what speed he was traveling, but we do have some evidence from which we are able to reasonably infer that he was travelling at an excessive speed," St. Charles Deputy Police Chief Erik Mahan said in an email.

The St. Charles police and fire departments responded at 5:44 p.m. to the crash, which occurred in the 2500 block of East Main Street on the city's east side. Pineda was westbound on East Main Street when the 2002 Suzuki motorcycle he was driving hit a car that was stopped in the center median waiting to make a left hand turn, police said.

Pineda was ejected from his motorcycle, which continued traveling east into the westbound lanes and hit a third vehicle, the release stated. He was taken to Northwestern Medicine Delnor Hospital in Geneva, where he later died, according to the release.

Pineda was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, Mahan said. The crash remains under investigation, he said.
