ELBURN – Town & Country Public Library is waiving fines for patrons who bring in food donations through Aug. 9 during this year's Food for Fines program.
Food for Fines began in 2015 as a suggestion from Circulation Manager Kathy Semrick and has since become a summer Town & Country Public Library tradition.
“Library fines should never keep patrons from wanting to use their local library,” stated Semrick in a news release from the library. “With Food for Fines, we want to encourage patrons with fines to come enjoy the library while also serving our community with donations.”
This now-annual initiative has brought in hundreds of much-needed supplies when food pantry demand runs high in the summer months, according to the news release.
“We know donations tend to peak in the winter months around the holidays” stated Library Director Emily Hoffman in the release. “Food for fines fulfills an important role by bolstering food pantry donations in the summer when children are out of school.”
The library is accepting a wide range of non-perishable food items and toiletries for the Elburn Countryside Food Pantry.
Needed food items include pasta, soup, cereal, crackers, rice, beans and other unexpired meal staples. Toiletries such as toilet paper, paper towels and tissues are also accepted. Donations should all be unopened and unexpired.
Town & Country Public Library is located at 320 E. North Street in Elburn. For more information, call 630-365-2244 or visit www.elburn.lib.il.us.
