GENEVA – The Geneva Women’s Club recently awarded $12,000 in scholarships to assist Geneva High School graduating seniors to further their education and women returning to the workforce in 2019, the club announced in a news release.
Students who received awards are Lauren Gansen for University of Wisconsin-Madison, Joel McEvoy for Taylor University, Madison Moravick for Illinois State University, Claire Nowak for University of Maine, Emily Wolf for University of Iowa and Eliza Peters for University of Mississippi.
Senior Hannah Herzhoff was awarded a Vocational Scholarship to study nursing at Waubonsee Community College.
Three Fox Valley area mothers of children under the age of 18 received Allison Thompson Scholarships to help them further their education.
The recipients were Valerie Mittman for Aurora University, Maria Garcia Ojeda for St. Augustine College and Sherrie Klint for Concordia University.
The scholarship program is named for Allison Thompson, a single mother and longtime GWC member who returned to college to study for a degree in education while balancing three jobs and three children.
The Geneva Women’s Club is a service and social organization that raises funds for scholarships and to support eight local nonprofits: CASA, Fox Valley Hands of Hope, Living Well Cancer Resource Center, Mutual Ground, TriCities Family Services, TriCity Health Partnership, Lazarus House and the needs of students in Geneva District 304 schools.
Founded in 1940, the organization raises funds each year from a holiday arts and crafts show in November and a bunco event in April. More information about the Geneva Women’s Club is available by visiting www.genevawomensclub.org.
