Ten years ago the ribbon was cut to open the new Sugar Grove Library on Aug. 8, 2009. The time has certainly flown, and my how we have grown.
The Sugar Grove Public Library began in 1962 with a donation of slightly under 500 books, and became a public tax supported institution in 1963. The first fully operational library opened in 1980 in a 6,600 square foot facility. Due to a growing population and the need for space, updated facilities, emerging technology and desires for programming and civic space, voters voted "yes" for a new facility which opened in the current location at 125 South Municipal Drive.
Our mission is to be a unique resource to offer open access to information that fosters a passion for reading, learning, and the exchange of ideas. As the heart of our community, we support democracy, citizenship, and the cultural growth of the Sugar Grove Public Library District.
Our current board and staff work diligently to be the thoughtful stewards to the library and creatively work to present programs, grow our collection, and manage the flurry of reference and technology questions we field every day.
In the past decade our circulation has continued to grow, with our latest fiscal year reporting that we are up 7.6% over our prior year. We’ve added computers, revitalized the teen area, introduced contemporary programming, and hold over 68,000 resources for patrons to utilize in our collection. After joining the SWAN Consortium of Libraries our patrons have access to almost 8 million items, a tremendous value for our community. Whether it is a little free food pantry, a collection of Wonderful Things, or even the Groovin’ in the Grove music series, we have something for everybody.
Please join us for a special celebration to be held on Aug. 9 at the Groovin’ in the Grove music series. The Beach Bum Band, a Jimmy Buffet Tribute Band, will be playing at 7 p.m. and we will wish the library, and the community that utilizes it, a special Happy Birthday.
Bernie’s Bully Dogs will be serving food for purchase and you may bring your picnics for a fun parrothead night. We hope to see you there, and please stop in to visit us to learn what we offer, and how we can be of service to you.
