ST. CHARLES – In the latest twist on the paint and sip business, a proposed business that would allow customers to drink beer and wine while creating custom wooden signs wants to set up shop in downtown St. Charles.

Katie and Mike Ilic want to open a Board and Brush franchise studio in a 1,700 square-foot space at 303 N. 4th St., Suite C, near D and G Brewing. The couple last year opened a Board and Brush franchise studio in Oswego and want to open a second location in St. Charles.

At their meeting on Aug. 19, aldermen on the St. Charles City Council's Government Operations Committee unanimously recommended approval of a liquor license for the business. The application will now go to the full City Council on Sept 3 for final approval.

According to a memo from St. Charles Police Chief James Keegan, a check with the village of Oswego showed no liquor license violations.

"They indicated that they have no liquor inventory at this time, but plan on having approximately $3,000 worth of inventory when they open," Keegan said.

The couple said that each painting session can accommodate about 35 people, but that sometimes they run a class with as little as 10 customers. On its website, Board and Brush states that it is the "original and fastest-Growing DIY wood sign workshop chain in the United States."

"What started out as one studio in Wisconsin has now grown to 249 locations across the U.S. – and we are adding new studios every month," the website states.

Earlier this year, Entrepreneur Magazine ranked Board and Brush Creative Studio 39th out 150 for the top fastest growing franchises of 2019.
