NORTH AURORA – A North Aurora police officer shot and killed a 54 year-old armed man who ignored repeated commands to drop his weapon.
According to a press release from the North Aurora Police Department, officers were dispatched to a home near the 600 block of Birchwood Drive at 11:17 p.m. Aug. 21 for reports of a suicidal person who was believed to be armed with a handgun. Officers were advised that the man was making suicidal statements and threatening to shoot someone.
The release states that at 11:37 p.m., an officer saw the suspect driving in his vehicle in the area of Timber Oaks Drive and Eastview Road. Officers attempted to stop the subject but he did not stop until pulling into his driveway in the 600 block of Birchwood Drive.
Officers observed that the man had a handgun and was holding it to his head. He then exited his vehicle and attempted to open the garage door to the home. After ignoring multiple commands to stop, an officer fired one round at the man, striking him.
Officers began lifesaving efforts until paramedics arrived and transported the man to AMITA Health Mercy Medical Center in Aurora, where he later died at 12:35 a.m., the release stated. A handgun was recovered at the scene.
The officer involved is a 13-year veteran of the North Aurora Police Department and has been placed on paid administrative leave pending an investigation by the Kane County Major Crimes Task Force.
