Norris fall programs help you stay fit in mind and body

Beyond the fitness center, group classes, tennis courts, indoor pool and more in the Norris Recreation Center are programs and seminars to help you stay fit and informed – in mind and body.

Through various health and wellness programs this fall, Norris can help you take the first step toward a healthier lifestyle or add something new to your existing routine.

New this year is a Walking Club, which will meet twice a month at 9 a.m. on Thursdays starting Sept. 5, at various parks within the Park District. With the motivation and accountability of others, it won’t be hard to put foot in front of the other. The distance and amount of time for each walk will depend on the location, which will be posted online the week prior to the walk. This club is free to all.

If running is more your exercise style, join Running 101. This program, which meets every Wednesday from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. starting Aug. 28, will help train you to progressively pick up your pace, with the end goal of preparing you to compete in a 5K.

TRX Challenge for ages 12 and older will take your routine to the next level. This full-body workout engages every muscle group, using your own body weight as resistance for each exercise. Norris offers two sessions: Aug. 26 to Oct. 28 and Nov. 4 to Dec. 16, meeting once a week for one hour.

Outdoor Bootcamp is another option to get your body in shape. For ages 18 and older, the program meets for about an hour every Tuesday from Aug. 27 to Oct. 29. A personal trainer will lead the group through calisthenics and body weight exercises, as well as interval and strength training.

As mind and body go hand in hand, two programs will help enhance your wellness experience at Norris.

Gong on the Lawn is back and will take place from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Oct. 18. Based on the ancient wisdom that the gong vibrates at the same frequency as the body, it allows the body to heal itself. The experience is relaxing and stress relieving; balances the central nervous system; and aids in meditation.

Or turn to the healing touch of massage therapy to also relax and reduce stress and improve fatigue, concentration and sleep quality. To schedule your appointment, call 630-377-1405.

Norris also helps you stay informed on hot topics and wellness in every stage of your life.

Pregnancy and Exercise, a new seminar at 6 p.m. Sept. 19, will give moms-to-be pointers on exercising safely during pregnancy and the benefits of exercise during and after pregnancy. No exercises will be conducted in the class.

During Rethink Your Drink at 6 p.m. Nov. 21, you’ll learn how to cut calories from your drink with an eye-opening presentation that will demonstrate the amount of sugar in common beverages such as juices, vitamin water, soda and other nonalcoholic drinks. The seminar also will help you better understand nutrition labels and make better drink choices. Bring a nonalcoholic beverage to class.

Both seminars are free to members and $10 for nonmembers.

Norris also will continue to offer Little Yogis to children ages 5 to 7 this fall with two sessions: Aug. 26 to Oct. 28 and Nov. 4 to Dec. 16. Children will learn poses in a fun, age-appropriate manner as well as instill the importance of focus, body awareness and confidence.
