ST. CHARLES – A dragon, lawnmower and Porsche will fly at the annual Wings & Wheels Festival of Flight, as the Fox Valley Aero Club celebrates its 90th year in the sport of model aviation from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 7 in St. Charles. An air show begins at noon.
The club has joined with local antique car clubs to showcase 90 years of automobiles and planes, a news release stated. Families will see more than 30 antique and special interest cars, as well as 100 radio-controlled-model airplanes.
“This is a special year for us because for 90 years our club has been hosting exciting public air shows and many special events for the community and members," Dale Gathman stated in the news release. "The club has evolved over the years. It was founded in 1929, under the name Flying Fools, and members flew hand-launched, free-flight gliders and rubber-band powered planes.
"In 1979, the club changed its name to Fox Valley Aero Club," he said. "For the past 40 years, there have been large advances in the model radio control hobby and we have one of the premier flying sites in the Midwest to demonstrate the latest advances to our hobby.”
