Geneva aldermen ponder uses for 6.3 acres on Peck Road

GENEVA – For sale: One old farmhouse for $1, if you can move it.

For consideration: Old barn to be repurposed or dismantled and sold for old barn wood.

Also for consideration: What to do with 6.3 acres at 1N384 Peck Road that Geneva owns – additional community garden plots, a parking lot that connects to Heartland Drive with a bike path extension while maintaining open space, or a solar energy farm?

For nearly 90 minutes, aldermen at a special Committee of the Whole meeting on Sept. 9 discussed what policy staff should pursue regarding 1N384 Peck Road, an elongated postage stamp containing an old farm house and a barn, adjacent to Prairie Green, a 580-acre wetland, open space and passive recreation area on the city’s western boundary.

Part of Prairie Green is devoted to community gardens. The land is owned by the Kane County Forest Preserve District, is in the city limits and is administered by the Geneva Park District through an intergovernmental agreement, City Administrator Stephanie Dawkins said.

Fourth Ward Alderman Jeanne McGowan spoke in favor of extending pedestrian access in that area.

“I’ve always felt there was a missing link as far as pedestrian access between Heartland Drive and the whole neighborhood in and around Heartland School to the Persinger Center,” McGowan said.

McGowan said a pedestrian path also should be considered along Peck Road going north and south for safety.

Other aldermen agreed that if the house could be sold for $1 and relocated, that would preferred. Aldermen also agreed that a parking lot would open up public access to the trails and open space.

Third Ward Alderman Dean Kilburg said with barns disappearing across northern Illinois, it was important to preserve them as a link to the state’s agricultural history.

As to solar panels? Public Works director Richard Babica said four acres would produce 640 kilowatts of energy – less than 1% of the city’s power.
