Veterans Day is Nov. 11 and several local veterans organizations are marking the day with ceremonies. Some local restaurants are offering free meals, and some local businesses are offering specials to veterans.
Batavia VFW Post 1197 will have a ceremony at 10:15 a.m. Nov. 11 at the Post, 645 S. River St., Batavia.
• St. Charles’ annual Veterans Day ceremony is at 10:30 a.m. Nov. 11 at the new St. Charles police station, 1515 W. Main St. All are welcome to attend. The ceremony will begin with the singing of the national anthem, followed by a prayer, remarks, a closing prayer, gun salute and taps.
• The St. Charles Public Library and the St. Charles History Museum invite the community for a special presentation to honor local veterans and all those who have served the country. St. Charles History Museum Executive Director Alison Costanzo will present “Honoring our Local Heroes: Veterans Day in St. Charles” from 4 to 5 p.m. Nov. 11 in the library’s Carnegie Community Room.
St. Charles has an extensive legacy of service, dating to its days as a Civil War training ground. The city contributed supplies for both World Wars, and many local men and women have served their country. The community has many unique connections to the defense of freedom, both past and present. The Fox River-Geneva American Legion Post 75 will mark its 100th year this year with a centennial celebration at 3 p.m. Nov. 10 at the post, 22 S. Second St., Geneva, a news release stated.
The event includes food, drinks, a 50/50 raffle and guest speakers Mayor Kevin Burns, Geneva History Museum Executive Director Terry Emma and Bernie Laskowski, a Marine and owner of Craft Urban, a Geneva restaurant.
Col. Kyle Moore will be master of ceremonies for the U.S. Marine Corps’ 244th year celebration at the Legion. A cake cutting will be at 5 p.m. Everyone is welcome and veterans are encouraged to attend.
Members of Sugar Grove American Legion Post 1271 will join John Shields Elementary School for a Veterans Day ceremony. Post 1271 also is hosting a Veterans Breakfast from 9 to 11 a.m. Nov. 10 at the post, 65 First St., Sugar Grove. Veterans eat free. Donations will be accepted for family and friends.
Several national restaurant chains are offering free or discounted meals to veterans. According to a list from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, the restaurants include Applebee’s, Chili’s, Baker’s Square, Golden Corral, Red Robin, IHOP, Texas Roadhouse, TGI Friday’s, Subway, California Pizza Kitchen and Little Caesars Pizza.
Great Clips and Sports Clips are offering free haircuts to veterans, while SmartStyle Hair Salons is offering 10% off a haircut and professional products.
The Home Depot is offering veterans a 10% discount on in-store purchases.
Walgreens is offering veterans and their families a 20% discount, as well as free flu shots. Veterans and their families will receive an 11% discount on qualifying purchases in-store and online.
