Bread & Roses benefit concert to celebrate ‘From Bethlehem to The Beatles’

The women of Bread & Roses chorus, hailing from St. Charles, Maple Park and beyond, will raise their voices to support the Family Service Agency with their fall concert, “From Bethlehem to The Beatles,” at 3 p.m. Nov. 23 in DeKalb.

The concert, directed by Peggy Safford, includes a number of new tunes and spans a wide variety of themes and styles. “Betelehemu,” a Nigerian Christmas carol, is one of a number of unusual versions of Christmas and other seasonal songs, including the Hawaiian “Mele Kalikimaka” (“Merry Christmas”) and traditional Hanukkah songs such as “S’vivon” (the spinning top or dreidl).

The program also welcomes in the fall and winter seasons with pieces such as “Leaf Dance” (composed by Bread & Roses member Jenny Covert) and “The Hands of Winter.” “Let it Be” and “Blackbird” by The Beatles will add a touch of pop, while pieces such as “Mrs. Claus” and “Text Me Merry Christmas” provide some fun. A number of songs will feature percussion. In addition to learning new songs this fall, Bread & Roses has added nine members for an even richer sound by 35 voices.

There is no charge for admission, but free-will donations will be collected to benefit the Family Service Agency of DeKalb County, which has provided youth mentoring, counseling, senior services and children’s advocacy for more than 60 years. FUUsion is a group of 10 Bread & Roses members who lend their voices to services at the Unitarian Universalist Society in Geneva.

The diverse members of Bread & Roses deliver messages of peace and justice, protection of the fragile environment, diversity, women’s empowerment and acceptance for all.

The concert is presented at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 830 N. Annie Glidden Road. For more information, visit breadandroseschorus.org.
