Spring Grove woman, 1-year-old die in 3-car crash in Lake Villa

A 64-year-old Spring Grove woman and a 1-year-old boy from Lake Zurich were pronounced dead after a three-car crash Thursday night in unincorporated Lake Villa, Lake County authorities said.

According to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded at
5:20 p.m. to Route 59 near West Beach Avenue and found three vehicles with substantial damage.

A preliminary investigation determined that a 2017 Nissan SUV driven by the Spring Grove woman was traveling north on Route 59 when a 2014 Ford pickup truck pulling a trailer tried to merge into the northbound lanes of Route 59. The front of the SUV struck the Ford before the SUV rolled and hit a southbound 2007 Hyundai minivan as it was sliding.

The woman and the 1-year-old child in the back seat of the SUV were pronounced dead at the scene.

A 3-year-old girl who also was in the back seat of the Nissan was flown to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge and remained in critical condition as of 4 p.m. Friday, Lake County Sheriff’s Sgt. Chris Covelli said.

Covelli said the three occupants were related, and both children were in child safety seats. Autopsies on the woman and boy were conducted Friday morning.

The occupants of the Hyundai – a 57-year-old man from unincorporated Lake Villa and his 15-year-old son – were taken to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville with serious injuries but have been treated and released.

The driver of the pickup, a 41-year-old Grayslake man, was taken to Advocate Condell Medical Center with injuries not considered life-threatening, Covelli said.

He said an investigation into the crash could take months as investigators try to collect data from recorder devices within the vehicles, perform a full reconstruction of the scene, determine the speed of the vehicles, identify any intoxicating substances that may have been consumed and wait for medical records and other subpoenaed material.
