An Elgin man has been charged with two counts felony aggravated DUI after he crashed into a pole while fleeing police, according to a news release from Kane County State’s Attorney Joe McMahon.
Samuel Cortez, 21, of the 300 block of DuPage Street in Elgin, also faces misdemeanor charges of DUI, fleeing or eluding police and driving on a revoked license, the release stated.
Elgin officers responded to a call at 10:30 p.m. Monday for a suspicious vehicle in the 500 block of Airlite Street. The vehicle left the area as officers approached. Police spotted the vehicle shortly after near West Chicago Street and Leonard Avenue, when it fled again, heading south on Jackson Street. Officers witnessed the vehicle crash into a pole in the 300 block of Locust Street, and then were able to see a cup that contained a liquid that smelled like alcohol, along with an open liquor bottle on the floor in backseat, the release stated.
Cortez appeared in Kane County bond court on Tuesday. Kane County Associate Judge Julio Cesar Valdez set Cortez’s bail at $5,000, and released him on his promise to appear in court.
Judge Valdez set Cortez’s next court appearance for 9 a.m. May 15.
