ELBURN - The village of Elburn has again been qualified as a Tree City USA, but is canceling its Arbor Day celebration this year because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
According to a news release from the village, this is the 21st consecutive year that the village has received this honor.
The Tree City USA program is a nationally sponsored certification program created and managed by the Arbor Day Foundation in cooperation with the National Association of State Foresters and the USDA Forest Service, the release stated.
According to the news release, there are seven important reasons to plant trees; they conserve energy, they help clean the air, they provide habitat for songbirds, they can increase home values, they help keep rivers and streams clean, they fight global warming and they enhance the aesthetics of the community.
Usually, Elburn's Arbor Day celebration brings the community together to plant and tend the trees, the release stated, but the village had to cancel in the interest of public safety.
