GENEVA – The Geneva Park District is taking reservations for plots at the Community Gardens at Prairie Green, according to a news release.

The Community Gardens at Prairie Green is located at the intersection of Peck Road and Bricher Road in Geneva. The gardens are open through October from dawn until dusk. Plots are $45 for Geneva Park District residents and $60 for non-residents.

“Especially now, during the COVID-19 pandemic, community gardens are a wonderful place to spend time outside, exercise, produce food, reduce stress, focus on your mental well-being, and stay connected while maintaining safe social distancing,” stated Traci Wicks, director of marketing and public relations for the Geneva Park District, in the release.

“The community garden is a great place for you to connect with the outdoors during the extended Stay at Home Order, so get outside and dig in,” stated Trish Burns, manager of Peck Farm Park.

At the garden, everyone must follow the best practices as outlined by the Center for Disease Control, including maintaining a 6-foot social distance, wearing masks and disposable gloves. Gardeners must also bring their own tools and are asked not to store tools or watering cans at the gardens this season.

“The Geneva Park District encourages all community gardeners to plan ahead and be prepared for the possibility that there may be limited access to the garden,” Burns stated.

Additionally, the district recommends mulching now to prevent weeds and to reduce soil moisture loss, use row covers for inset control when feasible, and stay ahead of seasonal tasks.

The Community Gardens at Prairie Green is a cooperative partnership between the Geneva Park District, city of Geneva, and Forest Preserve District of Kane County.
