New play 'Ghost Story' to livestream tonight through Kane Repertory

ST. CHARLES – Fans can tune in tonight when Kane Repertory Theatre of St. Charles involves viewers in its fresh project, The New Play Lab, a weekly virtual program with professional playwrights from across the country. It livestreams at 7:30 p.m. June 10 on YouTube Live.

"This week, we've been working on the wonderful new play, 'Ghost Story,' by Lia Romeo," a news release stated. "Come join us on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. to hear this fresh, dynamic and thoughtful story.

"In an effort to expand our support of black communities, a portion of all donations [will be] going to support The Loveland Foundation's Therapy Fund," the release stated. "With the barriers affecting access to treatment by members of diverse ethnic and racial groups, Loveland Therapy Fund provides financial assistance to black women and girls nationally seeking therapy."

Fifty percent of all donations will support The Loveland Foundation and 50% will go to the artists involved in the production.

About the play

Lydia’s just looking for a one-night stand, and so she’s brought a cute guy home from the company holiday party. But now things keep getting in the way. Like the fact that they could hardly be more different (she’s 40, he’s 28; she’s black, he’s white; she’s a New Yorker and he’s from the Midwest). And the fact that he’s still not over his ex. And the fact that her apartment might very well be haunted. A play about ghosts – both literal and otherwise – and the ways we try to move forward.

It is directed by Jasmine B. Gunter, and features Ashley Nicole Baptiste as Lydia, and Joel Ottenheimer as Davis.

About the playwright

Romeo’s play "The Forest" was selected for the O’Neill Playwrights Conference and the Kilroys List, and was scheduled to receive a National New Play Network rolling world premiere before the pandemic. She has been a nominee or a finalist for multiple awards. Her plays are published by Broadway Play Publishing, Playscripts, Dramatists Play Service, and Smith & Kraus.  She is also the author of a novel, "Dating the Devil" (BelleBooks), and a humor book, "11,002 Things to Be Miserable About" (Abrams Image), which has sold over 35,000 copies. She teaches for the New Jersey Play Lab and the graduate program in creative writing at Fairleigh Dickinson University.

"Our livestreams are free of charge; we ask you to consider donating $20, or whatever makes sense to you, to help us support these artists and effect change in our community," the release stated.

Audiences get a look at the development of the works and can join the post-read discussions.

Streaming next week will be "Invasions and Penetrations" by Mike Solomonson, June 17.
