A Geneva student was one of eight Chicago area students to win a Rotary District 6440 Vocational Scholarship to pursue vocational or trade careers, according to a news release.

Markus Malioris received a $1,500 award to study welding and auto fabrication at Waubonsee Community College.

Acording to the release, the candidates had to show good high school grades in relevant subjects, work experience in their chosen field, volunteer work in their chosen field, good extracurricular activities, character recommendations and more.

Many Rotary clubs screened applicants and sponsored one or two students. Rotary’s District 6440 selection committee interviewed and screened applicants further to determine the eight vocational scholarship winners.
