"This week we have a private reading and you are invited," announced Kane Repertory Theater, a St. Charles-based company. At 7:30 p.m. July 8, it will present "Mentors" by Kristen Palmer, directed by Kay Martinovich.
The reading will be followed by a Q&A with the cast, director and playwright, at which the audience members can share their thoughts and impressions.
About the play
Under investigation for allegations of sexual misconduct, David pays a visit to his former students, expectant parents Jenna and Brian. The circumstances surrounding his need for a new position unfurl over drinks and dinner, drawing the students and their teacher into a tangle of influence, artistic impulse and desire deeply wound through their present, pasts and futures.
New Play Lab
Kane Repertory Theatre has received submissions from hundreds of playwrights across the nation who are looking to develop their scripts. From these submissions, the Kane Rep artistic team selects a group of four scripts at a time that it commits to workshopping.
"We pair the playwrights with a cast of actors for a five-hour workshop session the evening before the public reading," the troupe stated in a news release. "The playwright uses the workshop to explore the various nuances of their work. In the public livestream, the script is read from beginning to end – allowing the playwright to experience the play in its full progression. Finally, you (the audience) are invited to be some of the first people to hear these new works. In the post-show discussion, you'll have the opportunity to join in on the process by sharing you questions, thoughts and feelings with the playwright."
