At 8:31 a.m. Monday, North Aurora police officers responded to a crash at the intersection of Mitchell and Bilter roads on the village's east side, according to a news release from the North Aurora Police Department. A preliminary investigation revealed that a red Hyundai Elantra, driven by a 49-year-old North Aurora woman, was southbound on Mitchell Road and attempted a left turn onto Bilter Road.

She struck a green GMC Sierra pickup, driven by a 35-year-old Aurora man, which was going northbound, the release stated. The driver of the Elantra was pronounced deceased on the scene and the passenger, a 67-year-old North Aurora man, was transported to Northwestern Medicine Delnor Hospital in Geneva by Aurora Fire Department paramedics and later airlifted to Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove with life-threatening injuries, according to the release.

The driver of the GMC was not injured. Police are withholding the names of the involved drivers and passenger at this time pending the notification of next of kin.

No citations have been issued and there is no indication of drugs or alcohol being involved at this time, the release stated. The crash remains under investigation.

Mitchell Road was closed to traffic for approximately 3.5 hours while investigators documented the scene.
