ST. CHARLES – Area cyclists are putting their feet in motion to raise money for area charities.

Since July, Pollyanna Brewing Company in St. Charles and Sammy’s Bikes in St. Charles have been teaming up to present a charity ride. Riders meet at 6 p.m. every Wednesday at Pollyanna’s and pay a $15 donation.

July’s rides raised $690 for Ronald McDonald House. Ronald McDonald House programs, which are located near top children’s hospitals, allow parents who are far from home to stay close to their hospitalized child and benefit from the comforts of home without incurring hotel and food costs.

August’s rides raised $1,455 for Special Olympics Illinois Region C, which provides programming for people in Kane, DuPage, Kendall and west suburban Cook counties. A ride Sept. 5 benefited the St. Charles Veterans Center.

Erin Kohlhoff’s son has been on District 303’s Special Olympics team for four years. She is appreciative of the charity ride.

“Any event that helps support our athletes is awesome in my book,” she said. “This is a great way for the community to know that these students are in our neighborhood, they’re right next door and in our schools.”

Her son’s favorite sport is soccer.

“He likes to be able to kick the ball far,” Kohlhoff said. “He does track as well. He just likes hanging with his friends.”

Nick Miller, taproom manager at Pollyanna Brewing Company in St. Charles, helped put the event together. The $15 donation includes one free beverage.

Pollyanna donates the beverages. One hundred percent of the donations raised go to the individual charity.

Sammy’s Bikes owner Sammy Radi is happy to be part of the event. He noted that both novice and avid cyclists are participating in the rides.

“We get all those entry level people who have never rode before and now they are biking 15 to 20 miles,” he said. “It’s a lot of fun. There are maybe a couple of avid cyclists, but the rest of them are really casual cyclists who are just getting into the sport. And it all goes to charity, which is the beauty of it.”

Those who would like to participate in a ride can go to Pollyanna’s Facebook page or Sammy’s Bikes Facebook page for more information, or they can stop by Pollyanna’s, 106 S. Riverside Ave. in downtown St. Charles, on the day of the event.
